Diaper Cakes: the Most Versatile Baby Shower Gift you Aren’t Giving!
Choosing a baby shower gift represents a dilemma for the smart shopper. Above all else, we value practicality; a baby shower gift must be something that the mom to be will get lots of use out of. There is no end to the list of options available, but there is something dreadfully mundane about purchasing a pack of onesies or washcloths. If you are a mom yourself, you know that a baby shower is an event that a woman eagerly awaits and fondly remembers. Anything that you do to make her day a little more unique will last a lifetime in the pages of her baby’s book and the memories she will take with her from the day.
But apart from hosting the event yourself, is there really a lot you can do to add panache to someone else’s affair, and still hold to the principle of giving a practical gift? Absolutely! Give the mom-to-be the most practical gift she can receive – diapers! We know what you are thinking. What could be more plain and ho-hum than a pack of Pampers? Well, it’s all about presentation! Diaper cakes are a stunning way to give the sensible gift of diapers and create a treasured memory for the mom-to-be at the same time.
The practical side of giving diapers needs little explanation. Newborns go through eight to ten diapers a day, on average. New parents are often taken aback by the speed at which they exhaust their reserve of diapers and supplies. To put it in the simplest terms, you just can’t go wrong when you give diapers! But therein lies the paradox! It’s no fun to give expectant parents a pack of diapers with a bow on top, but there is nothing that they are going to use more! A diaper cake eliminates this problem.
Diaper cakes are available in an array of different sizes and styles. The base of the diaper cake is constructed with usable disposable diapers, often rolled up like a jelly roll. Many times, this style diaper cake has baby care supplies hidden inside; everything from wipes and changing pads to blankets and bottles can be tucked inside the layers of the diaper cake. Baby care items and toys are often used to decorate the outside of the diaper cake as well, making it that much more useful for the parents-to-be. And if you want the absolute pinnacle of practicality, a Diaper Sampler™ Cake is the way to go. Diaper Samplers are created using equal numbers of all four leading brands of disposable diapers, allowing the new mom to sample all four and choose her favorite, saving her time and money. Since each diaper is clearly marked with its name brand, it’s easy for mom to tell which is which.
A diaper cake is the perfect solution when there is no registry available to help you choose a gift. Rather than risk purchasing something the new mom doesn’t care for, or doesn’t need, choose a diaper cake according to the theme of the baby shower, or according to the sex of the baby. Is mom-to-be expecting a surprise? No problem. Diaper cakes are available in many gender-neutral themes, as well as traditional pink and blue. Save the expectant mom the time and hassle of returning or exchanging a gift she can’t use. A diaper cake is guaranteed to be used an appreciated.
Perhaps you are actually hosting the baby shower – a diaper cake is the perfect addition to your event. The diaper cake displays beautifully as the centerpiece at a baby shower. It is a natural conversation piece and a great ice breaker for your guests as well. During the baby shower, use the diaper cake to play a guessing game. Have guests guess how many diapers and what supplies are hidden inside the cake. And after the baby shower is over, the mom-to-be can take the diaper cake home as your gift to her, which saves you money as a shower hostess. You get a centerpiece, a game, and a gift all in one!
Let’s not forget the visit to the hospital or the home after the new baby has arrived. For about the same cost as a bouquet of flowers, you get a gorgeous, festive showpiece that the new parents can display and enjoy for a few days just as they would display a floral arrangement. When flowers wilt and die, they end up in the garbage, but the new mom and dad can disassemble the diaper cake and put its contents to good use for the new baby. There is no more welcome sight (except Grandma!) to the parents of a newborn than a mountain of diapers and supplies! And just like flowers, you might find a little snip of the ribbon from the diaper cake in the new baby’s memory book down the road. You will definitely find a snapshot of your thoughtful and practical gift in the memory of the new mom!
In Need Of A Unique Baby Shower Gift? Then Do It Yourself Now
There are many stores, both virtual and real, that sell baby shower gifts. The vast selection is such that you can clothe and accessorize a baby from head to toe with headgears, shoes, and even designer clothes! There are baby supplies for just about everything a baby needs from waking up to sleeping. Though this is advantageous to a harried shopper, this can also mean that your gifts will be somewhat ordinary.
To make a truly unique baby shower gift, you can personalize a store-bought or a second-hand gift. If you have skills in arts and crafts, then you can make your gift more special; even if you do not have artistic talent, you can always find do-it-yourself tips to spruce up your ordinary gift.
Arts and Crafts in Gifts
You can do a lot of things to make a unique baby shower gift. You can embroider clothes and its accessories with the baby’s intended name; you can engrave the family name on the wooden rocking chair; you can carve the family crest on the heirloom crib; you can paint the high chair in the mother’s favorite color. Indeed, you can leave a tangible mark on your gift to enable it to tell a story.
If you do not have patience for carving and painting, you can make the gift packaging more interesting. Try to use alternative gift wraps like a photo collage of the parents or of the siblings. You can also fashion a Chinese box for the gift certificates instead of the usual envelope; this way, you are building suspenseful excitement for the mother while providing her with boxes for baby mementos.
When making a unique baby shower gift, always remember never to use harmful materials that can cause choking and toxic reactions like beads, lead paints, small balls, and other small parts. Just stick to non-toxic materials and methods to ensure both the baby’s and the mother’s safety during their use of your gift.
Do-It-Yourself Gifts
You can also make a do-it-yourself gift. This way, your gift will be a truly unique baby shower gift because you poured your unique individuality into the gift with the equally unique personality of the mother in mind. Think outside the baby-mother box and give the prospective mother the wackiest, funniest, and most memorable gift ever.
Why not give her a gift certificate providing her with car service on call, with you as the driver? Why not give her a membership in the local gym while you babysat to enable her to get back in shape faster? Why not be her cleaning lady while she recuperates? All these options are inexpensive but show how much you care for her well-being after her delivery.
If you have musical talents, then you can compose a song reflecting the mother. If you have dancing talent, then you can choreograph a routine named after her. If you have shopping talent, offer to accompany her. These gifts require time and sincere effort, which any mother will appreciate.
When deciding on that unique baby shower gift, always keep in mind the things that will make her happy during her baby shower. The gift is not about you; it is about the mother and her baby.
My baby quit breastfeeding, how long until milk supply dries out?
I switched my 3 month old to formula and wanted to gradually decrease the amount she breastfeeds. Well she no longer wants to breastfeed a all! All she wants is formula. I can get her to nurse when she wakes up in the middle of the night.
My breast are not sore but they have huge bumps/knots in them. How long will this be like this? How long until I will no longer produce milk? Should I keep doing nighttime feedings it just stop completely?
Thanks
Why is my milk supply diminishing (baby is 11 months old)?
I’ve been cutting back on nursing a bit as my baby approaches a year old. I cut out the middle of the night nursing a month ago, and cut out the afternoon nursing this week. I supplement these feedings with 6 oz bottles of formula. I used to get 6 oz when I pumped, but recently have only been getting 4 oz. Any ideas why? I don’t think my daughter is getting enough. Could the return of my period be the problem?

The first child always lots of baby supplies, including the of big items like the crib, car seat, high chair, stroller and so on. In the past, baby showers were only held for the first child, but that is changing now. Parents they usually already have many of the traditional gifts found at baby showers, thus a ‘sprinkle’ of items may be all that is needed but it is still important to honor the expectant parents, celebrate the newest member of the family, and give them useful and thoughtful gifts. The sprinkle baby shower invitations should indicate that it is a sprinkle baby shower.
Although a “sprinkle baby shower” has become very popular for second or more children that is not to say you should not have the traditional “full baby shower” for the second, third or more baby. For example if the family has a boy and is expecting a girl the theme could be related to the fact that it’s a girl and we need girly things. Another idea is where guests can bring a book for the family “library” in the baby’s name, or bring a food dish that can be put into the freezer for when the baby arrives.
A new unique theme that has increased with popularity with sprinkle baby showers is a blessing way, where women gather to wish the expectant mother well wishes and different gifts are given. Guests are asked to bring an item such as a candle or bead and a gift is made for the mother at the ceremony, in addition to the gifts for the baby. This shower theme can be reflected in the sprinkle baby shower cards and baby shower thank you cards.
Sprinkle baby showers are a time when the parents-to-be receive gifts for their baby and enjoy a celebration. The parents may not be new parents but the life entering their family will be new to the world, and new to Mom, Dad, and any brothers and sisters that may already be there.
For gift ideas, try thinking of something that the Mom-to-Be might need with another baby. Since she, no doubt, already has the big items, the focus should be on the small necessities like diapers, baby bath items, diaper wipes, bottles, baby lotion, baby clothes, toys, books, baby socks and so on. Becoming a new mom the second time around, or more, can sometimes be an even harder than a new mom anticipates. And for the Mom-to-Be, maybe a gift certificate for a massage or manicure or something similar just for her!

Family Finances – Budgeting for Baby
le, planning to have a child is a very exciting time. However, while it may be obvious it will create many lifestyle changes, many couples neglect to plan for the financial changes having a child will create. You might be going from two incomes to one and having the increased outgoings that a baby creates such as medical bills, clothes, toys, groceries and so on.
Just how much will your lifestyle differ once your child is born? If this is your first child, there might be significant changes in the household income. Will one of the parents be staying home at least in the initial months of the baby’s arrival? If so, the household income could be significantly cut back.
In addition, a new family member will increase the overall monthly costs for the parents. Food, diapers, new furniture, clothing and more will all add up. If both parents will go back to work once the baby arrives, child care costs can be surprisingly expensive. All in all, it’s important to plan ahead for the future in order to prevent going into debt once the child arrives.
What do savvy and financially-intelligent parents do in order to prevent these future lifestyle changes from incurring debt? Save. Simply put, savings account options can be a great way for parents to plan for a future child. By planning your finances ahead of time, soon-to-be parents can find the finances to pay for the medical bills and other necessary future items.
There are a number of savings account options that soon-to-be parents can consider to help pay for the initial bills and items that will be needed for a new baby. They can look into a high interest savings account that will protect their money and increase it over the upcoming months. A managed fund is another smart option for new parents.
Living off a new income might be implemented in the future and if this is the case, new parents should consider learning how to live off one income now – before the baby comes. This way, the additional money coming in from the secondary income can go directly into a managed fund or high interest savings account. In a strong performing fund you may be surprised just how fast the value of the fund can increase once you start depositing most of a second income into the fund. You’ll be able to build up funds to cover items such as doctors bills, baby supplies and more.
Planning a new baby doesn’t have to mean that your family will go into debt. By analyzing and budgeting your finances in advance, you can save lots of money through high interest savings account programs and managed fund options. When the time comes, the new parents will come home with a new baby – and no new debt. Learn how you can start saving now to plan for a new baby through savings accounts and more.
Human Milk for Human Babies
Breastfeeding is the natural continuation of pregnancy. Human babies are meant to receive their mothers’ milk immediately after they are born, and for about the first six months of life, mothers’ milk is all that babies need to promote normal, healthy growth and development. Breastmilk contains scores, even hundreds of factors that protect the newborn from illness and provide exactly the balance of proteins, healthy fats and sugars, and everything else the baby needs to continue the growth that began in the womb and produced the amazing little human being that he is at birth. A healthy newborn does not need anything other than his mother’s milk; in fact, anything else given to the baby will change the perfect balance in his gut (intestinal tract) and will interfere with nature’s provision of a perfect system to protect him from all of the bacteria and viruses that are present around him once he leaves the safety of the womb and comes into the world. Because of this, no formula, water or anything else should be given to the baby unless there is a medical reason for it. (AAP Policy Statement on Breastfeeding and the Use of Human Milk. http://aappolicy.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/pediatrics;115/2/496). Supplements of water or formula given to the breastfeeding baby also “interfere with the mother to infant biology of breastfeeding,” (A Woman’s Guide to Breastfeeding, American Academy of Pediatrics, 2002, p. 11), and will result in the mother having a lower milk supply and the baby receiving less benefit from her milk.
Although formula companies want us to believe that their products come close to breastmilk, and they spend millions of dollars advertising the “new” components that they discover and add to an increasing number of formulas available, the truth is that breastmilk can never be duplicated. Breastmilk is a living, changing fluid. Each mother’s milk contains antibodies to exactly the germs that she and her baby are exposed to in their own environment. As the baby grows, there are also changes that take place in the make-up of the milk that make it perfectly suited to the changing needs of the newborn, infant and toddler. Dr. Jack Newman, a leading expert in the breastfeeding field, states: “The differences between cow’s milk and formula are much smaller than the differences between formula and breastmilk.” (Newman, Jack, MD. The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers, Prima Publishing Roseville, CA: 2000, p. 13.) He goes on to say: “All pregnant women and their families need to know the risks of formula feeding. It does matter. All should be encouraged to breastfeed, and all should get the best support available start breastfeeding once the baby arrives.” (Ibid.)
Why, if it is the natural way to feed a baby, does it seem so hard to breastfeed? Why do so many mothers try and fail? Why do so many pediatricians advise moms to stop breastfeeding and switch to formula at the first sign of trouble?
The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly recommends breastfeeding without giving the baby any other foods for the first six months, and that breastfeeding continue with the gradual addition of other foods in the second half of baby’s first year. They recommend “that breastfeeding continue for at least 12 months, and thereafter for as long as mutually desired.” (American Academy of Pediatrics Work Group on Breastfeeding, Breastfeeding and the Use of Human Milk, Pediatrics Vol 100 No. 6, December, 1997, p.1037)
In spite of this strong position on the importance of breastfeeding, many nurses, doctors and other health care providers do not have the specific training needed to adequately help mothers and babies who are experiencing breastfeeding difficulty. Often breastfeeding failure happens because hospital procedures in the hours and days after the baby’s birth prevent the normal progression of lactogenesis (the process by which the mother’s milk supply is established) or a misunderstanding of the newborn’s feeding patterns leads to the early use of bottles and pacifiers in the absence of a medical need for such intervention. This causes subtle changes in the way the baby sucks, and makes some babies begin to refuse the breast and to prefer the very rapid flow of milk from the bottle. Even if a baby has had some bottles and has begun to show a preference for the bottle rather than the breast, it is not too late! Most young babies can learn to breastfeed effectively, and most mothers can establish a good milk supply with the right kind of help and support.
Board Certified Lactation Consultants have special training in helping overcome some of these breastfeeding problems. The earlier a mother gets help, the easier it should be to establish breastfeeding even if a mom and baby have a rough start and encounter problems in the beginning. Other good sources of help are La Leche League, a volunteer organization with chapters in most places in the USA and Canada, as well as in many other countries. In the USA, most local WIC offices have resources to help mothers who want to breastfeed their babies. Go to http://www.ilca.org/falc.html for a list of Certified Lactation Consultants in your area.
While it is ideal for mother and baby to be together so that baby can feed frequently during the day and night, many moms today face the reality of returning to the workplace within weeks of the baby’s birth. It is entirely possible to provide your milk to your baby even if you must be separated for many hours of the day. Do not let the necessity of working outside your home rob you and your baby of this priceless gift.
Look for the information about pumping if you must be away from your baby and still want to provide him/her with your milk.
Breast-feeding is the gold standard for your baby!

Put the baby to both breasts at each nosh, twitching with the right and then left alternatively. This enpersuadeds that at slightest one breast is emptied at each nosh, therefore stimulating promote milk production. As a director, ten resume at each breast is an normal time, but small babies generally drop snoozing before the twenty resume is up and better ones may take all the milk there is in half the time. If something goes unethical, it is possibly the might or the size that requests shifting and not the sort. When with dried milk, it is best to mix the nosh immediately before use, as the fat separates out when left to halt. But if you do make up the living noshs and keep them in the refrigerator, be persuaded to shake well before use, so that the fat is evenly distributed.
supply the baby manually when you can and never depart him with the container propped up beside him. It is not only hazardous, but it robs him of the comfort he requests.
